Manor Park Community School (Warwickshire)
No. on Roll: 607
Age Range: 11
- 16
Description: Secondary
Background and Purpose
After consultation with the Deputy Headteacher
we tailored a programme with the objective of engaging a specific
group of Year 10 and Year 11 students whose behaviour was challenging
and attendance decreasing. In addition, two students who had a record
of short-term exclusions and a particularly disengaged attitude
to mainstream curriculum, were targeted for one-to-one input. Linda
was looking for a fresh initiative that would hopefully engage a
predominantly activity motivated cohort of students. The main objectives
of the programmes were to improve attendance amongst both Year 10
and 11 students, build self-esteem and confidence in a social context,
improve behaviour, and avoid exclusion maintaining the students
on school roll.
Method Summary
1. Delivery of the Award in Sports Leadership
to both Year 10 and 11 students on school site conducted within
the 'Life Skills' programme.
2. Individual work focused on delivering units
of the Youth Achievement Award
3. Individual work focused on delivering units
of the 'Getting Connected' award scheme.
Method Detail
One In 2 Sports Instructor works within the
'Life Skills' programme, aimed at Year 10 and 11 students, between
9 and 12:30 each day except Thursday. The first half of term was
used to build relationships with the students, discuss the leadership
programmes, and introduce the students to the informal, yet productive
style of delivery. Following half term, working in conjunction with,
but not alongside, the PE department, the Award in Sports Leadership
began to be delivered. Although the leadership awards have a specific
unit structure, these are delivered in a non-uniform, informal way
extracting the specific achievements of each student on a session
by session basis. Two In 2 Sports instructors are present on a Wednesday
between 8 and 3:30pm. A breakfast multi-sport club is delivered
between 8 and 8:45am, open to KS3 students. In 2 Sports then focus
on working with two students on an individual basis; one of which
is working towards a Youth Achievement Award, the other toward units
of 'Getting Connected'. Both students receive input from other agencies
such as the Youth Offending Team and Connexions.
Outcomes
The Youth Achievement award allows the Award
in Sports in Leadership to act as a unit and therefore dual accreditation
is possible. In addition all of the awards delivered are QCA accredited
to a minimum level 1 and therefore count towards threshold and points
for the school. No hard outcomes have yet been attained due to the
programme still being underway. Soft outcomes such as improved behaviour
have been reported.
"We have found the In 2 Sports staff to
be reliable, punctual and professional in their dealings with both
staff and students. The year 11 group is working particularly hard
towards the JSLA and we are hopeful for positive outcomes for this
group of students. Good relationships have been built with the 2
one to one students, both of whom look forward to their time with
In 2 Sports. We have been pleased with the way In 2 Sports staff
fit in with us at school and are committed to helping our students
achieve."

George Eliot Community School (A Business &
Enterprise College), Nuneaton
Age Range: 11
- 16
Description: Secondary
Background and Purpose
Tim Over, head at George Eliot School Nuneaton,
wanted to engage a talented, and gifted rugby player that was disaffected
with the mainstream curriculum. The student was in Year 10, had
a poor record of attendance, and a history of short-term exclusions.
The head had supported the student but was running out of suitable
initiatives to engage him and was noticing his behaviour becoming
increasingly challenging. The main objective of the programme was
to engage the student, build his self-esteem and confidence in a
social context, improve his behaviour and avoid exclusion, utilize
his talents, and provide him with an alternate career path should
his dream of becoming a rugby professional not materialize.
Method Summary
Student mentoring in a vocational setting using
sport as a means of engagement and practical based (QCA accredited)
award delivery as a tool for raising self-esteem and improving behaviour
.
1. Informal Interview
2. Two-week work experience placement with award delivery
3. One day per week vocational mentoring with award delivery
Method Detail
An In 2 Sports Senior Instructor informally
interviewed the student on school site to ensure his suitability.
Stage 2 was for the student to begin a two-week work placement with
In 2 Sports. This involved him being picked up from school daily
at 9:00am and working alongside 3 instructors delivering sports
sessions to local primary schools. The student was then returned
back to school after completion of an Out of School Hours (OSH)
activity. During the two-week placement the student provided assistance
initially, but due to his increasing confidence and attitude, managed
to quickly progress and lead elements of sessions. Following the
initial work placement the student, as part of a personalised curriculum,
worked with one of our instructor mentors one afternoon per week,
again in a vocational setting. Based predominantly at Croft Junior
School, he began to extend his skills and really develop within
a social capacity. At this time we were working towards the Community
Sports Leadership Award, a step up from the Award in Sports Leadership
he had previously completed.
Outcomes
The student demonstrated an ability to effectively
communicate, organise groups, referee matches, and evaluate performance.
His achievements were recognised through accreditation by Sports
Leaders UK at Level 1. Reports from the head at George Eliot over
the students' behaviour and attitude within school were encouraging
and it was at this time the student was offered a youth contract
with Worcester Rugby Football Club.
"Thank you to you and your instructors for the care and support
you have given Luke during his two weeks work experience. I visited
him again yesterday and watched him take part of a lesson with Year
6 pupils at Croft School. He had a confident and mature manner and
has obviously learnt much about being an instructor. I was so proud
of him and what he is now achieving."

The school chose to use In 2 Sports to cover
PPA time to ensure that during cover time the curriculum is enhanced
by high quality teaching and not just 'ticking over'.
After school the coach also delivers an after
school club for our Key Stage 2 children until 4.45pm. This was
over-subscribed and we have had to organise two sets of sessions
to accommodate all the children who wanted to attend - testament
to the quality of the delivery.
On the whole the package agreed with In 2 Sports
is very good in fulfilling all the school's needs and is flexible
in that it can be changed from term to term.

The School continues to choose In 2 Sports
to cover Curricular and after school sports sessions from foundation
classes through to year 6. These take place on Wednesdays, Thursdays
and Fridays throughout the school academic year.
"During this academic year we have worked with
In 2 Sports for three afternoons per week in conjunction with our
PPA cover. Having bought into the services of In 2 Sports prior
to this we were confident that the staff had the appropriate skills
to deliver sporting activities for us and that their staff, who
are known to us, would be able to manage the children effectively.
PPA time has worked very well so far this year and we would hope
to continue with this programme again next year."

"In 2 Sports have been running an after school

they always request emergency contact numbers for parents/carers

which provides the ideal informal learning environment for disengaged
young people to work in. Within this programme the leaders help
organise childrens soccer camps during the holiday periods and engage
in a residential experience. This programme was aimed at Year 11
students who were having difficulties in their main stream education,
including attendance and behavour problems.

Over the past 3 years In 2 Sports have delivered
alternative education programmes in sport for VESA; a City educational
establishment who's role is to develop alternative education programmes
across the City and County. These programmes are aimed at students
who are looking to achieve vocational qualifications through sport
in both year 10 & 11.
To date we have delivered sports leadership
awards, and are now piloting Key Skills through sport and personal
health and fitness qualifications. These programmes all run as part
of a co-ordinated approach by the schools which sees time-tabled
slots brought into line at all the schools to enable prorammes to
run for the benefit of all students at all schools.
"We have been working with In 2 Sports as part
of the Increased Flexibility Programme which provides vocational
qualifications for KS4 students from City Schools. They are so flexible
and accommodating and their administration and reporting procedures
are prompt and informative. We have really valued their approach
and professionalism which ensures students are at the heart of everything."

At targeted venues during school holiday times
we deliver leadership programmes to young people. The aim is to
provide them with training to look at sports coaching as a possible
career route and make them aware of the opportunities available
in sport. In many cases this work is with hard to reach youngsters
who may not take up such opportunities in more formal surroundings.
It can be important to sight that in the last seven years we have
had 7 employees from our programmes and today we have three instructors,
one of whom is now a senior instructor, having left school with
no formal qualifications, a low attendance and labelled as a potential
young offender. The young people on this programme come from the
age range 8 through to 19 and in some cases are referred from agencies.
They are placed on an age appropriate programme with an award attached.
These programmes aim to increase confidence and develop social skills.
These programmes bring together young people from vary different
backgrounds and naturally involves some good examples of community
cohesion work.
"As a main objective of the Positive Activities
for Young People programme, community cohesion has proved to be
proactively embedded in all aspects of planning and delivery. This
is also evidenced by the commitment in ensuring a diverse team of
skilled coaches."

with the sports instructors who have taken sports sessions with

well by using appropriate behaviour management strategies, and they
have led by example. Their sports instructor abilities are obvious,
and we are impressed with your policy and monitoring arrangements.
We have found that your staff have an exemplary attitude to the

Talent 4 Life (Leicester)
In 2 Sports was approached by an organisation which provided training programmes to Leicester City young people who were not engaged in mainstream education and who were the most challenging of young people at schools across the city.
Talent 4 Life, having monitored our work with other agencies such as Connexions asked us to deliver the Sports Programmes it wished to run.
This included a combination of practical P.E sessions as well as awards leading to recognised qualifications.
Over the past year around 20 young people have participated on the programme, working towards and in the vast number of cases achieving their level 1 sports leaders award.
The expansion of Talent 4 Life will see an increase in sports awards and qualifications being delivered by In 2 Sports including the Personal Health and Fitness Course at Level 1 and 2.

Northern Warwickshire School Sports Partnership
In 2 Sports began supplying Northern Warwickshire School Sport Partnership (NWSSP) with coaching services in the Summer Term 2006 by providing
staff for an Extended Services showcase event held at a local Primary School, and a 'Day of Sport' event held at Alderman Smith Secondary School.
Following on from this in the Autumn Term our relationship developed resulting in us being asked to deliver a number of breakfast clubs.
In conjunction we were asked to provide senior staff to deliver the partnerships' 'Team Teaching Programme' for Games.
The NWSSP have been providing an intensive support package to individual teachers to develop their confidence, knowledge and skills in their
own school environment. This has been running for a number of years in order to meet one of the objectives of the PE & School Sports Club
Links (PESSCL) programme. Linked to this programme was the provision of the 'Lunchtime Leaders' scheme. This optional scheme delivered
the 'Young Leaders Award' (Sports LeadersUK Certified) to year 5 or 6 pupils and focused on peer mediation and making best use of
schools 'Huff & Puff' equipment. Since the scheme began we have worked with over 50 teachers and certified in excess of 60 children.
In 2 Sports are curently supplying NWSSP with 20 breakfast clubs and have extended the Team Teaching Programme to include Dance.

Stockingfarm Youth Centre
In 2 Sports were asked by a voluntary training
organisation to run a 12 week programme on Personal Health and Fitness
which would engage young people in or at the risk of being in the
NEET group. Not in Employment, Education or Training. The funding
was provided by Government Office East Midlands, with the aim of
engaging 10 young people. In 2 Sports delivered the Personal Health
and Fitness Level 1 Award which is the equivalent to a GCSE grade
D - F.
The programme started off as a turn up and
try session and attracted young people from local schools in Beaumont
Leys and New Parks as well as young people referred by agencies
such as the Youth Offending Teams, Connexions, and other agencies.
In total at the first session 24 young people turned up, this was
too many, but all were allowed to engage in the project. After a
few weeks the group settled down and we averaged 14 per session.
Of the 14 who engaged on a regular basis 8
are expected to achieve the award. In 2 Sports invited local colleges
down to talk to the group about progression routes. Two young people
have now enrolled onto a sports related college course. One young
person has gained employment in the sports industry since participating
on the course. In 2 Sports are now in line to deliver a similar
programme in New Parks, Highfields and Beaumont Leys.
